Oral hygiene is important for the health of your smile. This is why if you miss a brushing or flossing routine or fail to properly clean and care for the smile, your teeth and gums can suffer the consequences. This can result in serious and dangerous dental and health issues. So, it’s important to do all you can to have top-notch oral hygiene. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Paul J Rubenstein, has some tips and information for you.
The first thing you should do is remember to brush twice a day and floss once a day. This is very important. As you brush, make sure to brush for two minutes each time. It’s also recommended to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste that have been approved by the American Dental Association. As you floss, use a product of your choice (that is ADA-approved, of course) and be gentle on the gums. It’s also vital to visit your dentist every six months for a dental cleaning and exam.
The second thing you should do is have a healthy and balanced diet. To do so, you should avoid smile-harming foods and drinks that wear away the tooth enamel and promote cavities (sugary and acidic foods and drinks). You should also consume as much dairy products, water, milk, vegetables, and fruits as possible.
The third thing you should do is use fluoride dental products. This is recommended because fluoride strengthens and nourishes the teeth, helping them prevent dental issues. So, as you clean your smile, make sure to use fluoride toothpaste and fluoride mouthwash (the latter if you choose to rinse daily).
